A Guide to BlackBerry Messenger Voice (BBM Voice)

A Guide to BlackBerry Messenger Voice (BBM Voice)

BlackBerry was among the first manufacturers to include a way to communicate with other smartphone owners without incurring data or messaging fees. It was obvious that Apple was imitating the once-great company when it introduced iMessage. However, BlackBerry has since fallen from grace. The company hopes to turn things around with a revamped version of the operating system available for BlackBlerry devices, a brand-new touchscreen phone and features like voice calling added to BlackBerry Messenger.

Introducing BBM Voice

The company is calling it BBM Voice, and it leaves little to the imagination. Others, including Apple and Skype, have already provided ways for users to make video calls over WiFi or network connections, but few companies have solely focused on voice calls. Some Android users use Google Voice, which is a similar service, but BlackBerry has taken the initiative to really integrate it with existing features of the operating system that already exists. Google Voice still feels like a third-party solution and isn’t native to Android.

BlackBerry doesn’t plan to charge customers for this service, and it’s only available via WiFi. It will be available for users of BlackBerry OS 6 or 7, so even some older devices should be compatible. The company even plans to make the new service compatible with BlackBerry 5 down the road.

BBM Voice will include some unique features, like the ability to spit the screen between text messages with the BBM service and voice calls. Users will be able to reject calls and respond via text, like an actual call over the network.

A Replacement for Network Calling?

It will be interesting to see how carriers react. Features like BBM Voice mean that consumers don’t have to use the network to place calls, and it practically eliminates the costs users experience when calling internationally. Because it only works on WiFi, consumers won’t have to worry about racking up data charges either, which is where cell networks actually make their money. It seems like BlackBerry could be in conflict with the carriers. Of course, users will love it.

If it only works between BlackBerry users, it won’t eliminate the need for a carrier, and BlackBerry advertises it as a feature for use while traveling.

Right now, BBM Voice is in beta, and users can sign up at the the BlackBerry Beta Zone. It’s obvious that BlackBerry wants to be relevant again, and BBM Voice might be a step in the right direction.

Gizmon Camera Style Case for iPhone

Gizmon Camera Style Case for iPhone

Did you check the iPhone case from Gizmon used exclusively for military purposes?

If yes, then you should also take a look at Gizmon Camera Style Case for iPhone which suits civilians better. The GIZMON iCA BLACK for iPhone4/4S has retained the same retro style minus the color. The previous version was dark in color however this model has a vintage look. You have no other go but to agree that post the launch of iPhones, we hardly think of carrying our cameras wherever we go. But there is one thing that we all miss for sure and that is of course the classic feel of a vintage camera. The Gizmon Camera Style Case has filled the void for sure.

When someone looks at the Camera style case, he or she won’t know if it’s a retro camera or a phone in the first instance. The fact is that both are present in the device but now you have the added advantage of owning a vintage gadget as well. When you have to take a photograph, simply click like how you used to with a regular camera. Not only will your phone have a stunning look but it will also take some of the top quality photographs. Nice! Isn’t it? It might appear like the iPhone is covered by the case on all sides but all the essential ports are left open for you to click the original shutter button.

When you look at the device, it is quite likely that you will get carried away by its camera like appearance. However when you look at it from the back, you will be awestruck to find an iPhone instead of a vintage camera. Not only does it look good but it is also convenient to hold and manage. No more shaky movements while taking pictures. Those who have a flair for photography should definitely own one. Moreover you will enjoy the feel of a camera. Every single button of the iPhone will remain within your reach even when it is in the case.

In addition to its classy look, it has been designed keeping safety in mind. The Gizmon Camera Syle Case is entirely made of polycarbonate which protects your iPhone at all times. Every inch of the case including the front panel to the screen location has been carefully crafted in such a way that it gives the feeling of a camera. Usually, holding your iPhone in the right angle to get a picture perfect shot of a beautiful landscape is far from reality as it easily slips away from your fingers.  Now with the Gizmon Style Case, you can make your dreams come true.

Additionally in place of the volume button all you have is a hollow space that creates the shutter effect found in an original camera. It is the most apt choice especially for those addicted to retro style cases.

Here is a list of the most vital aspects of the case:

  • The Gizmon case transforms your iPhone into a camera that has classy vintage style
  • The familiar feel of the shutter in an original camera has been reproduced
  • It has been made out of Polycarbonate which is tough and durable
  • The case is totally scratch proof and offers excellent protection for your iPhone
  • It is easy to hold and you can get that perfect shot you’ve always wanted

Tips and tricks for avoiding iPhone spyware

Tips and tricks for avoiding iPhone spyware

Most iPhone users used to laugh at their Android counterparts whenever the subject of Android spyware or malware would surface; but we live in changing times and most iPhone users are now finding that they’re not all that different when it comes to apps stealing and misusing their personal data. Apple itself has come under fire for acting like most cell phone spy software does – it even had a class action lawsuit filed against it for privacy invasion. The saddest part is multiplatform malware is now riding the iOS wave with the most recent one hitting Windows through app strategically placed in the App Store. However, the more important point is that iOS isn’t safe from malware/spyware, but with a few precautions most iOS lovers can keep their devices clear from all malware or spyware infested waters.

They’re like cockroaches

Since they can hide so well sometimes and then they’re in your face. While nuclear blasts can’t kill them an effective insecticide does the job pretty quick – let a decent antivirus do the same for the malware/spyware on your iOS device. Just like there’s malicious apps that can hurt your iPhone there are apps designed to find problems and rid your life of them. So do a scavenger hunt on the App Store and find yourself an app that can not only find existing problems but protect your iPhone from future trouble as well.

No get out of jail free card

There really isn’t one for people who jailbreak their phones. What you’re effectively doing is ensuring that your iPhone doesn’t have a warranty – and of course jailbreaking does a little more than just let you have free apps, it creates a free pass and multiple opportunities of infiltration for malware as well. While the App Store has of late started having trouble with malware the fact is that Apple has an A+ on its report card when it comes to finding and destroying malware so far. And iPhone’s that haven’t been jailbroken were touted as virtually impossible to penetrate for a long while – with Apple waging war against malware with such tenacity one should feel a little more secure. However, a jailbroken iPhone is another story altogether.

No poison Apples

Apple won’t feed you one. If you venture outside the realms of the official App Store you have no one to blame but yourself for the repercussions. The trouble with iPhone, which is much the same as the trouble with Android phones, is that it won’t allow you to choose what permissions you hand over to your apps. You either give them what you want or you don’t install them. In that case venturing to the outside world for an app maybe a catastrophe because you don’t know what information or data your app maybe sending off somewhere else, but if it’s from the App Store at least you can sure it doesn’t have any malicious intent.

When there isn’t a door don’t open a window

If you don’t want an app to have access to everything in your phone then don’t install it. You can’t control every aspect of permissions; once you install an app it takes what it wants. In some cases this has proved to be a problem because information has then been taken and sold to advertisers at large. Go through the permissions on your app properly before you download it. Twitter of all people admitted to storing user data even if they’ve deleted the app for Twitter itself. If big tech firms can’t respect your privacy you really can’t trust small developers to. Whatever detective work you want to do has to be done before you install the app and use it, once it’s on your system the information it touches may not be as easily erased.

With cloud computing, computer resources are delivered over a network instead of a single computer. The network can be a set of servers accessed via the internet or through shared computers on a business intranet. The concept of cloud computing has been around for decades but this technology has recently been more broadly embraced by the business community. This infographic gives an overview presentation of cloud computing and many of its most important advantages.

This cloud computing infographic presents historical statistics, current figures, and future projections. This includes financial information and market share data. Central to this infographic is a detailed easy to read timeline graphic starting with the origins of cloud computing in the 1960s and then following the evolution of this important technology platform. The results of a survey conducted with two-hundred fifty companies to name the key features that attracted them to cloud computing are also presented. Efficiency was the number one reason given for incorporating cloud computing into their business operations. Cloud computing can also greatly decrease the costs a business incurs, in fact more so than most other technologies. As the infographic presents, cloud computing can save a company forty percent of their operating costs!

Bose Sounddock III (3) to work only with iPhone 5

Bose Sounddock III (3) to work only with iPhone 5

A source from Bose has confirmed that the newest SoundDock, the SoundDock III, will only support the iPhone 5 and will launch within a week or so from today, November 28th, 2012.  I had previously discussed alternative solutions to make the iPhone 5 play on the Bose SoundDock II.

The new Sounddock III (3) will charge and play music from the iPhone 5 through its speakers, as many people have been anxious for.  We weren’t sure if it was going to be called the SoundLink III / SoundDock III or if it would support Bluetooth, but we now know that it is going to be called the Bose SoundDock III and will not support Bluetooth Playback.

If you were waiting for the newest generation SoundDock to use on your iPhone 4 or 4S, unfortunately, the newest SoundDock III will only support the iPhone 5.

What if I have an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s, will that work on the new SoundDock III?

For families that own an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S, I would recommend purchasing the Bose® SoundLink® Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II – Nylon, as it supports Bluetooth playback, which can be used on all Apple Devices, Samsung Galaxy S3, and all phones that support Bluetooth Speakers. It will also work to play music from your Computer, provided it has Bluetooth capabilities.  It is also a portable Bose speaker that features a battery that will last for up to 8 hours of playback.  It can be used outside at BBQ’s and you can play music to it from your phone in your pocket.

Update 11/28/12: Bose SoundDock III

As per a phone conversation I had with a representative working for Bose’s Sale Department, Bose will be coming out with a new Sounddock or Soundlink that will have a charge and play for the iPhone 5.  Currently, it is still up in the air if you can use Apple’s Lightning to 30-pin adapter to play music from your iPhone 5 – the most updated information I have received is that it only charges the iPhone 5, but doesn’t play music.

There is still solutions you can use if you can’t wait and need to play music through your iPhone 5 and Bose system.

A Quick Summary of those solutions:

  • Wireless Bluetooth Music Receiver Adapter for Bose Sounddock – This is a receiver that uses Bluetooth technology to connect to your iPhone or any other Bluetooth capable device and is placed into the Bose Sounddock.  If you are having a party, you can control the tunes in your Sounddock from the phone in your pocket.
  • SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II – If you have never purchased a Sounddock in the past, and are looking for a solution NOW, this is for you.  It combines Bluetooth Technology and Bose Speakers.  This is a Mobile Bose Sound System, meaning you can take it anywhere with you.  With Battery Power that can last for up to eight hours, this is perfect for a Tail Gate, BBQ, or anywhere you want to listen to your tunes.  When the battery is dead, it takes about 2-3 hours to charge to 100%.  Even when Bose launches their newest dock, this will still be a comparable alternative, if not, more favorable.

Other User account is the only option on Log in Screen in Windows Vista – Solution

Other User account is the only option on Log in Screen in Windows Vista – Solution

I had a client this week who was having issues getting into their Windows Vista installation, mainly, they were only given the option to Log into Windows Vista Home Professional with ‘Other User’.  Problem is, they never created ‘Other User’, nor did they have any idea what the password could have been for ‘Other User’.  Poking around Google yielded nothing but unanswered questions. I dug deeper, and retraced my clients steps in coming to the error they were receiving.

The Process:

The problem started with them receiving the error message:

File : \Windows\system32\config\system
Status: 0xc000014c
Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt.

With a few searches around Google, restoring the registry to a time before it was corrupted can be done by doing a system restore through a Windows Vista Install CD or a Vista Boot Disk.  Since Most Manufacturers don’t ship new computers with the actual cd, and only put a Recovery partition onto the Hard drive, it may be hard to accomplish this task.  However, if you are able to boot into the Selective Startup (tapping F8 at computer startup), there should be a way to get into the Recovery Partition.

Once in the Recovery Partition, you should be able to do a system restore to your latest back up point.  However, make sure you choose the correct windows installation from the list of OS installations.

The problem that my client had, was that they were unaware of this option.  Instead they consulted Google and found Neosmart.net and their Vista Recovery Discs.  While these discs are a GREAT tool, they must be used with caution.  The Vista Recovery Disc is a bootable Recovery Utility.  My client, unfortunately, (incorrectly) used the Boot Repair utility found on the disc, and when they restarted after performing the ‘boot repair’, they were greeted with the Vista Login Screen, but it was only showing ‘Other User’ as an option.  This is where I received a phone call from them, and they needed help.

Issues at Hand:

When I first sat down at the computer, I immediately tried booting into Safe Mode, but nothing was coming up.  This was very intriguing to me since we have the following two symptoms;

  1. Can’t access Safe mode after a Corrupt Boot Repair
  2. Can not boot into Safe Mode or Selective Startup
  3. Cant turn off the Computer without pressing the power button on the tower (no power options are displayed at the Windows Login screen where ‘Other User’ is shown)

I booted into the Vista Repair Discs that my client had purchased and downloaded from NeoSmart.net and immediately knew what had happened.

When going into the Start up repair on the NeoSmart discs, it brought up two instances of Windows Vista.  My client had chose the wrong Instance/partition and it adjusted the MBR (master boot record) to boot into the Recovery Partition that was installed onto the machie by the Vendor.  This was the reason for ‘Other User’ popping up on the Login Screen.  This was also the reason why the Safe Mode options were coming up.

The Fix

I happened to have original Vista Home Premium Installation Discs and I inserted the disc into the CD-ROM drive and booted into that disc.

  1. Once you boot into the disc, you are greeted with Vista’s Installation Menu:
  2. You need to click onto the ‘Repair your computer’ option.
  3. The next option that comes up will show System Recovery Options, where you need to select your correct installation of Windows from the list. Click next after you choose your Installation.
  4. It will attempt to repair your boot, in my case, it detected the boot problem, and told me to restart for the changes to take effect.  If you click cancel while it is Automatically trying to fix your problem, you just have to click Startup Repair from this menu:

Once my computer restarted, the correct Windows Login Screen appeared with my clients User Account front and center.  Problem Solved.
